The 4 Cs of Diamonds, Explained Simply
Every diamond is graded on four characteristics: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Understanding what each grade actually changes about the way a stone looks — and which grades you can safely compromise on — is the single best way to get more diamond for your budget.
Cut comes first
Cut is the only C created by human hands, and it has the biggest impact on sparkle. An Excellent-cut diamond returns light like a mirror; a poorly cut one looks dull no matter how flawless it is. Never compromise on cut.
Color and clarity: buy for the eye
Color grades D through F are colorless, but G–H stones look identical to the naked eye once set — especially in yellow or rose gold. Similarly, VS1–VS2 clarity stones are eye-clean in nearly all cases. Paying for grades you cannot see is the most common first-buyer mistake.
Carat: the sweet spots
Prices jump at round numbers — 0.90 ct looks nearly identical to 1.00 ct on the hand but costs meaningfully less. Shopping just under the popular weights is the easiest saving there is.
